(source: <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673620306772\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673620306772\" target=\"_blank\">2020 Lancet paper<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/06\/17\/worlds-population-is-projected-to-nearly-stop-growing-by-the-end-of-the-century\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/06\/17\/worlds-population-is-projected-to-nearly-stop-growing-by-the-end-of-the-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breakdown of population history and forecasts by continent\/region (below, from the Pew Research Center)<\/a>, it seems my chances of seeing human population peak and start to decline will hinge primarily on how population growth in Africa is handled, and secondarily in Asia. That continent may be a prime landscape for innovations that improve the living and education standards, especially for women (specifically the &#8220;educational attainment and contraceptive met need&#8221; components of the UW forecast model), and that &#8212; ideally, simultaneously, secondarily &#8212; turn the knob on climate change (e.g. reducing deforestation, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FT_19.06.08_UNPopulationProjections_revised.gif?w=584&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another figure in the Lancet paper shows the year in which countries will have their net reproduction rate fall below the replacement level. If the goal is slow Africa&#8217;s contribution to global population growth as soon as possible, this figure may suggest where in Africa innovation could be of greatest benefit. Zimbabwe, Somalia, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Chad are highest priorities.
